What is CBSE?

The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), is a national school education board established under the Government of India but is also recognized internationally. It offers a uniform educational framework across schools both in India and in international countries like UAE, Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and many more.

This guide from the TutorX community provides you with a deep insight into the structure, assessment methods, range of subjects offered and other necessary aspects of the curriculum.

The Curriculum's Structure

The curriculum is divided into four learning phases to prepare students for a comprehensive educational framework.

Foundational/ Primary Stage (Class 1-5)

It generally includes students of age approximately 3-11 years. During this stage, students shift from getting introduced to the academic aspect of their life and developing basic learning abilities through various enjoyable activities to a structured learning process with multiple subjects.

Children in classes Nursery to 2 basically learn:

  • Drawing
  • Physical activities

Subjects include (Classes 3-5):

  • Internal assessment (Unit tests, project work, viva, or practicals): ~20% weightage.
  • Board or theory examination: ~80% weightage.

Grading System

For most of the subjects, the total score is out of hundred marks, which includes theory, practicals and internal assessments. The CBSE board uses a 9-point grading system to show the student's relative performance.

Grade Performance
A1 Outstanding
A2 Excellent
B1 Very good
B2 Good
C1 Above average
C2 Average
D Satisfactory (pass)
E Needs improvement

Advantages of the CBSE Curriculum

The CBSE curriculum has several advantages including national uniformity, strong alignment with several competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CUET, etc., international recognition and many more, making it a popular choice among students and parents in India and abroad.

Nationwide standardization: The CBSE curriculum follows a uniform syllabus and assessment pattern across its affiliated schools in India and abroad, which is particularly useful for families who relocate frequently.

Strong alignment with Indian competitive examinations: The curriculum's strong alignment with NCERT textbooks, which form the core reference for JEE, NEET, CUET, NDA, and many other national level entrance examinations, make the transition from school level learning to competitive exam preparation easier.

Widely recognized: CBSE certificates are recognized by all Indian universities and many international institutions as well, making it useful and flexible for students willing to pursue higher education abroad. However, individual universities and countries may have their own admission criteria and qualification requirements.

Holistic development: The curriculum prepares students beyond academics by emphasizing art education, sports, music, drama, debates, quizzes, etc. These extra-curricular activities help students develop communication skills, critical thinking abilities, leadership qualities, teamwork skills and creative outlook.

Concept-based learning: Rather than relying entirely on rote learning, CBSE has shifted to competency-based, application-oriented learning, emphasizing on understanding concepts and applying them to real-life situations. Students develop information analysing skills, scientific mindset, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking abilities.
